My gandmothers engagment
My grandmother sent this in to the Asbury Park Press on 02/8/06 section "More stories of marriage proposals" and surprised Pop-pop
"My boyfriend asked me to marry him. It came as a surprise. I thought, due to the Depression, parent approval might be hard, but it was approved. When he returned, Stan said, "Close your eyes and don't open them until I tell you.'' When he told me to open my eyes, he was on his knee holding my left hand and slipped a doughnut on my finger, saying that it would have to do until "I get the real thing.'' We were engaged at our family Christmas dinner in 1939 and were married June 22, 1940".
